Link building changed enough between 2023 and 2026 that practitioners who learned the trade in 2018–2022 are now placing the wrong things on the wrong sites and getting paid for it. The change is not subtle. It is the AI-citation graph adding a fourth check, SpamBrain’s crypto vertical tightening, and quarterly publisher-side robots.txt rewrites silently breaking placements that worked yesterday.

What does the four-check donor minimum actually filter?

Before any pitch goes out, every donor passes four independent checks.

DR 40+ from Ahrefs. Floor below which guest-post traffic is too thin to compound. The number itself is a proxy; what matters is that DR correlates with how much pagerank flows through the placement, and DR 40 is roughly the inflection where one placement starts being measurable in your own organic traffic.

5,000+ verified monthly organic visits cross-referenced between Ahrefs and SimilarWeb. Both tools have known undercounts and overcounts; using both eliminates the publishers that gamed one tool but not the other. We disqualify any donor where the two sources disagree by more than 40%.

Currently indexed by Google with non-zero ranking surface. Trivial check, frequently skipped. Some donors have pages that are technically published but not indexed because the publication has thin-content issues sitewide. Those donors place do-follow links into a vacuum.

Returns 200 OK to GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot user agents on a sample article URL. This is the new floor since mid-2024. We curl each user agent against a representative article on the donor’s site; if any of the three returns 403 or 429 with no clear bypass, the donor goes on the AI-blocked list and we deprioritise pitches there.

The fourth check disqualifies more donors than the other three combined. Many crypto and fintech publications still have site-wide robots.txt rules from 2023 that block AI crawlers indiscriminately, including the ones that would otherwise be high-value placements.

Why does post-launch monitoring matter as much as initial placement?

The honest part: 12% of placements that pass all four checks at the time of publication silently fail one of them within 90 days. The most common failure: the publication tightens robots.txt because of a corporate AI policy change, and the AI-fetch check switches from 200 to 403 without anyone noticing.

We re-run the four-check audit on every active placement every 30 days. If a placement fails AI-fetch post-launch, we open a publisher-side conversation about reverting the rule (sometimes works), or we move budget away from that publication on future placements (always works).

Without post-launch monitoring you are paying for a placement library that gets quietly stripped of AI-citation value as time passes. The work shows up in your reports as completed; the citation graph contribution does not.

How should anchor distribution actually be designed?

Anchor distribution in crypto is one of the places where 2018–2022 thinking actively hurts you in 2026. The old default — heavy partial-match and exact-match because they ranked faster — gets caught by SpamBrain crypto vertical sweeps that hit 4–6 times a year on commercial queries.

This distribution mirrors the patterns we extract from competitors that have survived multiple SpamBrain sweeps without manual actions or recovery rebuilds. It ranks slower in months 1–3 than aggressive distributions, but it survives algorithmic events without anchor stripping.

The crypto-specific tweak: we keep exact-match below 4% even when the page is a deep-cluster article that would safely take more in B2B SaaS. The cost of being wrong on this in crypto is a 30–60 day recovery window. The cost of being conservative is a slower start.

The advice to “disavow toxic links aggressively” is one of the most consistent failure modes we see clients arrive with. They run an automated audit tool, the tool flags 60% of their inbound links as “toxic”, they disavow the lot, and Google sees a sudden disavow event followed by a measurable drop in organic visibility.

Google’s 2024 disavow guidance is conservative for a reason. Most “toxic” links are simply low-quality and ignore-worthy. The disavow file should target only links that look like they could trigger a manual action — typically penalty-precedent patterns: paid sponsored without disclosure, link-network footprints, hacked-site placements, foreign-language link farms with anchor stuffing.

We end up disavowing typically 8–15% of what an automated audit flags. The remaining 85–92% gets ignored, because Google’s algorithmic spam filter handles them just fine without our help. Aggressive disavow is the strategy that pays for the next agency to undo it.

How do PR landings fit into the cadence?

Digital PR — HARO, Featured.com, sourceofsources, qwoted — earns the highest-DR donors a crypto link program can land (typically DR 70+). The catch: landing rate is 10–25% on submitted pitches. You write 10 expert responses to land 1–2.

The pattern that works: budget for 1–3 PR landings per quarter on top of the standard donor cadence. Treat PR as opportunistic — when a query lands in your ICP and you have a credible expert to quote, you go fast. When it does not, you don’t pitch, even if there’s an open query, because the time-cost of a non-fit pitch is higher than the value of a misaligned link.

For crypto-licensing firms specifically, the open-query density on legaltech-adjacent topics is high enough that a PR-heavy program can supplement 25–40% of the link target with PR landings. For DeFi infrastructure or tokenization platforms, the density is lower; PR contributes maybe 10–15%.

What does a normal monthly cadence actually look like?

For a typical crypto SEO retainer with the link cadence inside it (8–12 placements / month), the mix usually breaks down something like this.

The mix shifts by client. For licensing firms (legaltech-adjacent), digital PR weight goes up. For crypto SaaS targeting developers, expert-quote contributions on dev-media outlets weigh more. For crypto exchanges, guest posts on regulatory-analysis publications carry the most weight; we build the guest-post calendar around the regulator-update cycle in the client’s primary jurisdictions.

What patterns are worth flagging on a discovery call?

Three signals reliably predict an underperforming program.

Donors are old (article publication date 2+ years ago) but the agency talks about them as “active placements”. The placement is still live, but Google’s freshness signal has long since stopped weighting it. New placements monthly matter more than counting old ones.

Anchor distribution skews above 12% partial-match-plus-exact-match combined. Sustainable for B2B SaaS. Risky in crypto. Survives until the next SpamBrain sweep.

No post-launch AI-fetch monitoring. The team set it up once, never re-checked. The placement library is silently bleeding AI-citation value at roughly 4% per quarter, and nobody is tracking it.

If your existing program shows two or three of these, the math usually says rebuild rather than incrementally fix. The rebuild costs 60–90 days of slower ranking velocity; the incremental fix costs 12+ months of compounding inefficiency. Run the numbers honestly.
